Abstract

Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) are essential for improving stability, reliability, and efficiency in modern power networks. This paper examines the use of multi-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) converters in STATCOM devices to enhance voltage regulation and power quality under diverse load conditions. A comparative study of 3-, 5-, and 7-level NPC converters is presented, combined with a PI-based dq-frame control strategy for reactive power compensation. MATLAB/Simulink simulations under various scenarios—including voltage dips and inductive/capacitive load changes—demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Results show that higher-level NPC converters significantly reduce harmonic distortion (down to 0.93% with a seven-level NPC), improve voltage stability at the point of common coupling, and ensure reliable operation in both inductive and capacitive modes. The findings highlight the potential of multi-level NPC-based STATCOMs as a practical and efficient solution for enhancing power transmission performance and supporting modern grid requirements.
