Abstract

This study analyzes the dynamic behavior of wind and its influence on the power delivered by a type-4 wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. The system model was developed in the SIMULINK simulation platform, incorporating voltage converters on both the generation and grid sides to optimize energy conversion and active power delivery. Wind speed and direction data were obtained from the NASA POWER platform, located on Putzalahua Hill, Cotopaxi Province, Latacunga Canton, Ecuador. The recorded hourly data over a year was processed in Python and analyzed using the Wind Rose Plots tool, which identified the predominant wind direction as ESE (east-southeast). The results show a power coefficient of 0.44 at a blade pitch angle of zero degrees to deliver the maximum power, demonstrating that the wind turbine was able to deliver an active power of 1.7 MW with a power factor of 1 at a wind speed of 12 m/s, with a deviation of 15% from the theoretical value of 2 MW, confirming the applicability of the proposed model for grid-connected wind power generation applications.
