Resumen

Wind energy is a renewable energy source that offers both environmental and socio-economic benefits. However, its implementation in low-wind areas remains challenging. The Archimedes Screw Wind Turbine (ASWT) is a horizontal-axis wind turbine that forms a three-dimensional conical structure shaped like an elongated spiral, resembling a seashell. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of ASWT research progress, including its advantages, limitations, and development opportunities. The method used is a narrative review by gathering and comparing results from previous studies on the design and performance of ASWT. The findings indicate that the Archimedean spiral profile results in better aerodynamic performance compared to the logarithmic spiral profile, with a power coefficient (CP) value reaching 0.2668 at an opening angle of 60°. The optimal aspect ratio (AR) is found in the range of 1.0-1.1 to balance aerodynamic efficiency and structural strength. The use of NACA type airfoil profiles improves performance compared to S and FX-type airfoils and shows effectiveness at low wind speeds with minimal noise levels. Additionally, the addition of a brimmed shroud is proven to increase the CP value by approximately 3.6 times compared to turbines without a shroud. Overall, ASWT holds significant potential for urban applications, but further research is still needed to encourage the adoption of this technology in the renewable energy transition.
